There are many ways to choose and enter this awesome maritime career. You can join merchant navy after completion of 10th atleast and you must be greater than 18 years old.
Here I am going to describe the various ways to join this field at different stages and different departments.
You can join merchant navy after getting any of these qualification:
10th (after Matriculation)
12th (after Senior Secondary Examination)
B.Tech (after Engineering)
After 10th (matriculation), you can join merchant navy through one of the following courses:
- GP Rating : 6 months
- Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) : 1 year
- Near Coastal Voyage (NCV) : 6 months
After 12th (Senior Secondary), you can join merchant navy through one of the following courses:
- B.Tech (Marine Engineering) : 4 years
- B.Tech (Naval Architecture & Offshore Engineering) : 4 years
- B.Tech (Ocean Engineering) : 4 years
After B.Tech (Graduation), you can join Merchant Navy through one of the following courses:
- PGDME (GME) : 1 year
- ETO (Electrical Technical Officer) : 1 year
Note: There is still many ways, through which you can join merchant navy. You can join it after completing management courses like: Port Management & Logistics Management.
There are 3 departments on ships like deck, engine and general.
For deck side career, you have to choose one of the following courses:
- B.Sc (Nautical Science)
- B.Sc (Maritime Science)
- DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science)
For engine side career, you should choose one of the following courses:
- B.Tech (Marine Engineering)
- PGDME (GME)
- B.Sc (Maritime Science) : Polyvalent course
For general side career, you should pursue one of the following courses:
- G. P. Rating
- Cooking Courses
IMU CET Examination is an easy way to shape your career in merchant navy as an officer. Here we are talking about the examination for pursuing pre-sea courses for merchant navy i.e. IMU CET.
What is IMU CET?
IMU CET is an entrance examination for various programmes or courses for maritime sector or career in merchant navy. Before IMU CET, selection for government institution of maritime sector was done on the basis of IIT JEE (JEE Advanced) ranks and scores. Introduction of IMU CET has made easy to get into top government as well as top private institutions. So, IMU CET is nothing but a competitive entrance examination similar to engineering entrance examination for admission into institution of maritime sector.
